Vancouver Police have arrested a 61-year old man in connection with a stabbing in unprovoked attacks at an East Vancouver gas station yesterday morning.
Witnesses reported a man hit a pedestrian with his vehicle at the Esso station near Hastings and Skeena just before 6:30 a.m on June 1, 2022. He allegedly jumped out of the vehicle wielding a knife and machete and chased people around.
During the attack police say he punched a passerby, then attacked the pedestrian stabbing him in the neck and back.
The man attempted to steal a motorbike parked at the gas station but he was stopped and arrested by police.
The stabbing victim, a 67-year old man, was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries while the other victim who was punched was treated on scene
The BC Prosecution Service has charged Leslie Dale Chudek with one count each of aggravated assault, assault, uttering threats, and operating a conveyance in a manner dangerous to the public.
Chudek remains in custody until his next court appearance.
“We don’t know if there was a motive for this attack, and the fact that it appears random and unprovoked is extremely concerning,” says Constable Tania Visintin. “The victims and the suspect did not know each other, and did not appear to have any significant interactions before the attack.”
The investigation is ongoing.
