Youth suspect arrested after uttering threats and attempting to stab a police officer

Teenage male utters threats and attempts to stab a police officer with a knife.

On Wednesday, June 1, 2022 around 7 p.m. A police officer was sitting in his parked vehicle when he was approached by a teen repeatedly making offensive gestures directed towards the officer, according to police it was a clear attempt to engage with the officer.

Burnaby RCMP say The officer stepped out of the vehicle to talk to the teen near Hastings Street and Duthie Avenue, and the suspect immediately threatened to kill the officer.

The officer attempted to arrest the teen and a struggle started. During the struggle the teen is said to whip out a knife and attempted to stab the officer.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot to a nearby residence. According to RCMP they locked down the area down as officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect and his family.

For about one hour the suspect was uncooperative and acting erratically before surrendering safely to police. In a statement the police say the youth is determined to be a 15-years old.

Charges of Assault with a Weapon and Uttering Threats are being forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service.
