The Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) was given its long overdue grey verification badge.
A grey checkmark denotes that the “account is verified because it is a government or multilateral organization account.”
“Specifically, eligible government institutions include national and local crisis response, public safety, law enforcement, and regulatory agencies, embassies, and other major national level agencies.”
All elected or appointed officials, including heads of state, representatives for foreign governments, senior diplomats, and cabinet members, are eligible (national level). Institutional accounts, senior leaders, and authorized spokespersons are examples of eligible multilateral organizations.
Twitter started to label “state-affiliated media entities.” in 2020.
Twitter slapped the state affiliate markers to accounts of China’s Xinhua and People’s Daily and since-banned Russia Today and Sputnik. CBC wasn’t given a label.
The Twitter policy defines state-affiliated media as “outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution.”
