A climate activist was arrested after vandalizing a woolly mammoth exhibit smear pink paint on it at the Royal BC Museum on Wednesday.
A group that calls itself On2Ottaw posted a video to social media that shows a woman named “Laura” boasting about the fresh smearing of paint on the mammoth tusks sitting with an open jar of paint and threatens Ottawa after making demands.
“If the government does not enact a citizen’s assembly to tackle the climate and ecological crisis in the next one to two years, then we will be travelling to Ottawa to demand one,” said Laura.
Museum staff told CHEK News that the paint smearing occurred around 11 a.m., and that those behind the incident have been taken into custody by Victoria police.
The paint smearing happened around 11 a.m., according to museum staff who spoke with CHEK News, and Victoria police have detained those responsible.
“Staff safely apprehended those involved and called Victoria Police Department who arrived on the scene and have taken the activists into custody,” said staff, further noting that the paint had been cleaned off within a few hours.
“It was water soluble, so it’s removed from his tusk and there are a few drops on the diorama and that have been completely removed.”
