Suspect arrested after police, paramedics shot with pellet gun

A man already on bail for assault arrested after shooting paramedics with pellet gun.

On Sunday night around 11 p.m paramedics were working behind the Carnegie Centre near Main and Hastings when someone begun to shoot pallets at them from above.

The paramedics too cover and called the police. When officers arrive on scene they were also shot with a pallet gun coming from the window of a Hastings Street rooming house.

VPD’s Emergency Response Team searched inside the Maple Hotel, at 177 East Hastings Street, and arrested a 45-year-old suspect who is believed to have been the shooter.

One officer suffered minor injuries after being shot several times, said Vancouver Police.

The man, who was already on bail for an unrelated assault and was wanted BC-wide for theft, was returned to jail. He is now facing new charges for assaulting police and paramedics, possession of a weapon, and breaching bail conditions.

The VPD also noted there was a series of serious incidents at main and Hastings over the weekend that are currently under investigation.

Other incidents of note:

  • A 69-year-old man was injured when he was attacked from behind and struck in the head with an object Friday night. The senior, who uses a motorized scooter, was attempting to navigate along the sidewalk when there was a confrontation with a stranger. The suspect has not been identified.
  • The window of a transit bus was shattered early Saturday morning after being struck with a projectile as it moved through the Downtown Eastside. No injuries were reported, and VPD is working with Metro Vancouver Transit Police to investigate.
