Police seek information after Assault in Whalley

A women was physically assaulted in the staircase of a underground parking lot in Surrey.

Surrey RCMP is advising the public of an assault that occurred in Whalley early Thursday morning and seeking information in regards to the incident.

During the early morning of May 5, 2022, at 2:24 a.m, Surrey RCMP received a report of a women screaming and a fire alarm ringing in the 13500-block of Old Yale Road.

When officers arrived on scene the located a a woman who had been physically assaulted by a man in the staircase of an underground parking lot. The man took off before the police were called, no suspects have been located or arrested.

the initial investigation by the Surrey RCMP Special Victims Unit (SVU) revels indications of the assault being linked to street level sex work. The Surrey Women’s Centre’s SMART Van works closely with SVU and has been engaged to distribute information regarding this assault to their clients.

The suspect is described as a clean-shaven Caucasian male in his 20’s, with a slim build and brown hair.

The Surrey RCMP statement says the RCMP has said specifically for workers in the sex trade to be extra vigilant to the additional risk to their safety.

“The decision to disclose that the victim is a sex worker is to ensure that persons in this vulnerable group specifically, are aware of this incident and can take additional steps to be safe.” says Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer Corporal Vanessa Munn.
