Man charged for machete attack in Vancouver

A man injured four people in a rooming house swinging a machete in the Granville Entertainment District.

Ibrahim Abdela Bakhit, 48, has been charged with one count each of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Ibrahim Abdela Bakhit set his room on fire in the rooming house near Granville and Smithe streets On August 7, 2022. Vancouver Fire Rescue Services were on scene around 10 p.m. to put out the fire and called Vancouver Police for assistance because a man allegedly attacked and stabbed four people inside the building.

When officers arrived, they were confronted by the suspect who was still armed with the weapon. Shots were fired by police and the suspect was injured.

The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital where he is receiving treatment for serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

Four victims of the machete attack were also in hospital for serious, life-altering injuries.

Bakhit remains in custody until his next court appearance.
