Former Greater Victoria elementary school teacher charged with child porn gets life time teaching ban

A teacher that was employed with the Greater Victoria School District had his teaching licence suspended after guilty plea for possession of child pornography.

Mitchell was arrested on June 9, 2020, after police received a report of inappropriate communications with a minor. His cell phone and computer were seized and the police discovered he was in possession of child pornography.

Mitchell’s guilty plea came in on April 29, 2021, and he was sentenced to 18-months conditional sentence followed by 12 months probation.

According to the justice section on the BC Government website a conditional sentence is “a sentence you serve in the community, instead of in jail. Judges use conditional sentences only if they are satisfied you are not a danger to the community and do not have a history of failing to obey court orders.”

According to the consent resolution agreement posted August 9, 2022, His probation conditions say he must not have contact with anyone under the age of 16-years and must be included on the National Sex Offender Registry for 10 years.

In a school newsletter posted online by the school on Sept. 25, 2019 they welcomed Travis Mitchell as one of their newest teachers.

Mitchell first had his licence issued on Jan. 23, 2018 and it was cancelled on November 1, 2021 for non-payment.

The commissioner wrote in a ruling that Mitchell agrees the facts in the report are true. He agrees to never reapply for his teaching licence and the director will never issue him certificate of qualification again or any other authorization to teach K to grade 12, under section 64(g) of the Teachers Act.

The commissioner decided on the life time ban because he was convicted of a sexual offence involving the exploitation of minors for sexual advantage, failed to maintain appropriate boundaries with a minor, and conduct the potential to undermine the public’s confidence in the teaching profession.
