Musk says Twitter will start notifying users of their shadow bans but not end the practice

After Twitter Files part two was shared on Twitter exposing shadow bans and secret blacklists or what Twitter calls it “Visibility Filtering”. Elon Musk said there’s an update coming out for Twitter for users to view the status of their accounts to see if they have been shadow banned, why and how to appeal.

Independent journalist Rupa Subramanya replied to Musk’s tweet asking why shadow banning would happen in the first place and would still be a thing in the future.

“But why shadow ban in the first place? What is to be gained? Why is shadow banning still a thing?” Subramanya wrote. But Musk did not reply.

A tweet from Musk last month suggests that shadow banning will still be practiced and not ended.

“New Twitter policy is freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach.” Musk tweeted last month adding the new Twitter policy will deboost and demonetize still undefined “Negative/hate” tweets.

“Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted & demonetized, so no ads or other revenue to Twitter.”

He also said the policy will apply to individual tweets opposed to account wide.
